Clothing for Backpacking

What to Wear

Remember weather can be unpredictable, so pack and dress accordingly.  For warmth, the layering system works best.  Wear several layers of light-weight clothing.  Light weight wool is one of the best insulators from cold.  Everyone should bring a hat and gloves while camping during winter months.  Also, good sturdy shoes should be worn, tennis shoes are OK as long as they are sturdy (they do not have to be high tops, but high tops are better).  Light-weight canvas shoes should not be worn while hiking, they do not provide enough support, especially while carrying a heavy backpack.  To help your feet warm and dry, bring several pairs of socks.  Also, sock liners (or thin socks) will help prevent blisters from forming during the hike.  Another thing to prevent and treat blisters is moleskin, which can be found in the 'Dr. Scholl's display of any discount store.
